Project News & Updates

April 11, 2024 - Gladish Community and Cultural Center officially names its upcoming arts centre The Beatriz Schweitzer Centre for the Arts

Pullman, WA – The Centre for the Arts at Gladish is pleased to announce a transformative pledge of $1.5 million from Mrs. Beatriz Schweitzer and Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer III. Beatriz Schweitzer and her husband, Dr. Schweitzer, the founder of Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL), have long been champions of philanthropy and supporters of the arts.

The Schweitzer’s' generous pledge will play a pivotal role in the project to build the Centre for the Arts at Gladish, a state-of-the-art cultural and performance venue to be built within the historic Gladish Center in Pullman. In recognition of their extraordinary generosity and Beatriz's unwavering dedication to supporting the arts, the centre will be named The Beatriz Schweitzer Centre for the Arts.

Beatriz Schweitzer has demonstrated a longstanding commitment to philanthropy and a passion for supporting the arts. Her generous contributions to organizations like the Washington Idaho Symphony have enriched the cultural landscape of our community and provided invaluable support to artists and performers.

Dr. Edmund O. Schweitzer III is renowned as an electrical engineer, inventor, and visionary leader in the field of digital protection for electric power systems. Through his pioneering work at Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories, Dr. Schweitzer has revolutionized the performance of electric power grids worldwide, making a profound impact on the electric power utility industry.

Prior to this pledge, the Centre for the Arts at Gladish has raised about $3.2 million in grants, donations, and pledges. However, an additional $1.2 million is still needed to break ground and commence construction on this project.

The Beatriz Schweitzer Centre for the Arts will serve as a beacon of inspiration and creativity, providing a dynamic platform for artists, performers, and audiences to come together and celebrate the richness and diversity of the human experience.

The overall goal to complete the project is $10 million, and donations are still needed to meet this goal. Donations can be made to the Friends of Gladish.
